Bunkar Vikas Sanstha
Bunkar Vikas Sanstha (BVS) is a registered society of the chanderi weavers engaged in producing, dyeing, weaving and selling chanderi fabrics and bringing welfare for the weaver community around Chanderi in Ashoknagar district in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
Before BVS was constituted and strengthened, around 3000 chanderi weavers were working for the traders in a condition similar to bonded labours. Where select traders used to supply raw material to the weavers and woven fabric were returned to the trader and weavers used to earn wages in lieu of their work. This arrangement left very little option for the weavers as they were bound to work for the traders in their inability to access the buyers of the fabric directly. Traders made huge profits where as the weavers suffered poverty since generations.
In year 2003, UNIDO started working with weavers. Self Help groups of the weavers were organised to start regular saving activities. Gradually this gained momentum and within a time span of 1.5 years some 60 groups were engaged in regular savings thus generated INR 140,000 collectively. UNIDO matching grant created a workable capital for the weavers and the idea of federation of SHGs – Bunkar Vikas Santha was mooted.
Bunkar Vikas Santha was registered under Societies Registration Act 1973 by
